A few months ago, I spent some time doing volunteer work in Kenya through the volunteer agency International Volunteer HQ. I stayed with a Kenyan family and volunteered at an orphanage, Internally Displaced Persons camps, and with the Masai (warrior tribes in Kenya). It was an extremely moving experience. Read more.

    mohnkuchen (poppyseed) cake

    Chris has been under a bit of stress lately.  Part of that has to do with an unexpected trip that called us both away for a week.  Given that he had been scheduled to be away for 11 days shortly after, he had to cram all his work (read: a lot) into a couple of days to complete everything before his trip.  Of course, Chris just happens to be brilliant, so he was able to pull everything off.  That still doesn’t negate his need for a treat.

    It also happened to be his birthday while he was away.  Hence, poppyseed cake.  Chris’ grandmother made this for him as a child, and he has been after me to perfect the recipe for years.  Unfortunately his family doesn’t have the recipe anymore, but I’ve come pretty close.  I’m now trying the Mohnkuchen (poppyseed cake) recipe his dad gave me on our last visit.
